Check out our afternoon catch. We couldnt have done it with out Lateef… my new windsurfing buddy. Latheef likes to borrow my cycle a lot these days too.
I told Latheef that I wanted to go hunt octopus today with my friend. Latheef with all smiles says, “ok.” When he showed up at the house with nothing to hung octopus, I realized we had a communication problem. I grabbed enough snorkel gear for all three of us and headed out. While we were swimming out to the deep blue sea, I found a steel bar laying on the bottom of the ocean. Since I had done the octopus hunt before, I knew a rod like this was necessary. At this point, Latheef still has no idea what we really want to do. He heads out to the breakers and the waves were intense. We were swimming in like 2 inches of water with 4 foot waves crashing down on the coral. Tons of fun… False. (Said like Dwight Shroot.) Anyway, I got everyones attention and let everyone know that Im not really interested in snorkeling past the break today. It was at that time Latheef saw the rod in my hand. He said, “Ah, we will be catch that thing… I dont know the English name.” Since I had been saying octopus all day, I assumed he meant something else. I guessed sea cucumber, sea urchin, and ell… all of which Latheef said no. I said, “octopus.” He again said no but began to describe the octopus and its sticky tentacles. I said, “Yes octopus.” I think the picture communicates the rest. Latheef figured out what we wanted and led us to our catch. It took us about 15 min to pull the octopus out of his hole. It was a ton of fun. We took the long way, but we finally got to catch the octopus. Not one, but two.
After skinning it on the beach, I took it to a nearby cafe and ask them to prepare it for me. (Angie is not well versed on octopus recipes.) It cost me $3 and they cooked it up nicely. It was a big sucker so I gave some to my neighbor.
